You can obtain all these

You can obtain all these documents from your Spouses employer. If that organization is a large one (employing more than 1000 people) then the best option is for your spouses lawyer to talk to State Department. Otherwise if its a small company (1000 employees) your spouses employer can provide all this information.

Was your spouse working as a consultant/contractor in US? I have come across a case where the person was working as a contractor and he was asked for all the W-2s of all the employees of the company. Again, this is something usually not asked for and you DONT need to carry it with you.

  Hello everyone, 2 years

Hello everyone,
2 years back on H4 i went to US after that i got h1 , as my daughter was in india with my parents i came to india , now again i went for the h4 visa with my daughter. Here are the questions I was asked:

The good news is that I I got the H4 visa. I was thinking they would ask me a lot of questions about my preious visa. They haven’t asked about my status,But I had to face lot of questions about my husband’s job status like

1) why my husband has changed his employer .
2) when did he change .
3) how much he is earning.
4) His bank statements & Tax Returns statements.
5) why i am staying for such long period in India Like this.

So my suggestion is if u’r husband has changed his employer u may encounter questions regarding his previous employer.

plz carry Rs 3000 – 5000/- money with u ( generally we won’t carry our handbags into consulate) ,
due to some new changes for H4 visa we have to pay 912 rupees as extra fee , i have seen lot of people coming out for this reason.
These are my experiences ….

Thanks
Malathi

Malathi:   Can you please

Malathi:

Can you please tell us what this Rs.912 is for?  Is it the fees related to a particular consulate?  I will be attending the interview at chennai consulate.

Thanks,
Anjana.

  Hello, We went to Chennai

Hello,

We went to Chennai embassy…My husband was on vacation and that might be the reason they didnt ask more questions. I was asked only 3 questions: show your husband's I797, where will you live in the U.S. and when will you go to the U.S.
Thanks once more..One thing i want to appreciate again is the quick response and especially the soothing words which is unlike many other forums.
All the best to you!

Hi,
In most cases a copy is good enough. You can also carry a notarized copy of the I797.

Hi,
I carried my original I 797 as my spouse was in India at that time. I did not want to take any chances. I do know that other people just carry a copy and its never even asked for. Just carry the original if you want to cover all the bases..

Since ,i have very less time between my marraige and fly back to US,i need info reg this .Please help!!

Hello Anusha Vudatha, Sorry

Hello Anusha Vudatha,

Sorry for the late reply.

  1. Get the earliest date in October possible ..time it after you get the marriage certificate. You can also get a court marriage done prior to October 9. This is just an idea for getting your marriage certificate quickly..:))
  2. It usually takes about 1-2 weeks but if everything goes well, you might just get your stamped passport within a week. I got mine within a week.
  3. Since you live in Hyderabad, you should go to Hyderabad Consulate.

I was in a similar situation. It will be a little rush but then you will be able to fly back with your husband.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

All the best!

Can you  please tell me how long it takes to get a marriage certificate after court marriage?

Based on the above comments I am thinking of a court marriage before the actual ceremony.

Thanks in advance , Your reply will be very helpful.

Hello Amit, I agree with you.

Hello Amit,

I agree with you. Getting a court marriage will certainly help you save a lot of time and effort. Usually it takes a couple of weeks but you may want to check with your local Magistrate for a more specific time frame.

Please post here if you get more information from the Magistrate.

Thanks,

Hello Shahed,

Please send the information they need for administrative processing. Usually they give the 221(g) at the time of the interview but your case is a little unusual. Well, sometimes, they want more time/data to verify the information so just send that to them asap.

The time to process each case is very different but usually people get this done in 2-5 weeks.

I hope you get this sorted soon! Your case is a little peculiar and I hope you can come back and post an update so that other people in the same situation can refer to your experience.

Good luck.

My fiance is coming to India on Sep 2nd for our wedding. Our wedding is on 8th of September. We are planning to schedule H4 visa interview the following week of our wedding. But I read in this forum about court marriage, I am really not aware of that. Since we have very less time after our wedding, Is there anyway to get our marriage certificate sooner the possible with this court marriage?

Please provide me the details about court marriage.

also I wanted to know how long it will take for H4 visa stamping once the interview is done.

Thanks for your information.

Our detailed story for H4

Our detailed story for H4 visa interview.
Me and my husband got married in  court at CDO in Kathmandu, Nepal.  It was a court marriage and we got our married certificate on August 16, 2011.
We browse for some information online about H4 visa stamping in Kathmandu, Nepal but the information is very less.
The following day, I help him fill out the DS-160 (Application form).  On that very same after printing the DS 160 Confirmation Code, we went to Nabil bank located in front of US Embassy in Nepal at Maharangunj for payment     ($150).  It is Nabil Bank that schedule the Interview appointment only after the payment.  Luckily, there is a vacant schedule on August 22.  I was even apprehensive at first but my husband is eager to proceed on that given date.  He said, It is good since Im still around.   So the interview date was set on August 22.

  1. We start sorting and making copies of all the documents which I think are needed for my husband's interview.
  2. I already bring all the important documents with me as I only have short time to stay for my vacation.  Im on my 5th year on H1b and I-140 has been filed under EB3 category.   I  got my H1b visa stamping in Canada last July 13, 2011.  So I was thinking that they will ask lots of documents from him.
  3. We notarized my passport, I-797 and visa.
  4. The rest of the documents like W2, paystub, certificate of employment, the H1b extension packet that the lawyer give me which are composed of (I-129, LCA, TOR, diploma, teaching license) were photocopied only.
  5. No wedding pictures for H4 visa interview : We were married in CDO, so there is no formal ceremony and we have no wedding picture to present just in case the Consular Office will ask.  So, we prepared to print out a copy of our pictures for the past 3 years.  We visited different countries together before our marriage so we have lots of photos to present.  We only chose the best one of course. LOL!
  6. I orient him with all the papers he has to bring during the interview,  what are those papers and the possible questions the Consular Officer could possible ask.

H4 visa interview of my husband

  1. His interview is schedule at 8:00 AM.  We arrived at the Embassy at 7:30.  The gate is still close so we waited outside.  We noticed that there are lots of people waiting too.
  2. At exactly 8:00 AM the gate opened and so we went in.  Only the applicants are allowed to stay so I waited him outside and stayed at a Coffee house.  Relatives of the applicants stayed at the Coffee house anxiously waiting for the result.

Questions asked during my husband's H4 visa interview
During the interview (as narrated by my husband) the following things happen:
1.  They have to wait in line outside.  The guard directed them when to get inside the building.

2.  He carry a bag where he keep all his files, album and inhaler since he has cold that time.    Applicants were  scanned and the bag is not allowed.  He left his bag at a counter.  He only carry with him, the album and the files to proceed with the interview.  No electronics were allowed inside, so I took his mobile phone before that.   (Note: Some US embassies has no provision for you to leave your things.  They wont allow you to get in)

3.  At this point,  the notarized I-797, passport, DS -160 Confirmation Code, and the huge file containing all the documents were collected from him.  A Nepali lady took it from him. (I was surprised why they took the bulky documents from him.  Usually it is only the passport, DS-160 and I-797 are supposed to be ask at this point.  The documents you carry with you will be presented only during the actual interview questions).  There was a confusion at first if he was the primary visa holder.  He explained to the lady that he is applying for H4.  No priority number is given.  The name has to be called.

4.  Waited for few minutes and then fingerprints were taken.

5.  Went back to seat and waited for the actual interview.

6.  During the interview, the Consular Officer has already the huge file they took from him.  My husband describe him like Abraham Lincoln.  He is very nice and has a pleasant personality.

      a. Can you show me your wedding picture?..........

      b.  Look at the photos one by one (surprising huh!)..........

      c.  Ask if my husband know a particular person (husband does not know the person,  so he said no.  He is also confused why the consular officer ask that particular question)............

     d.  How did you meet?.................

     e.  Scan the file and look at the marriage certificate then said.  Oh so you just get married last week?  Then he look at the photos again, scanning each pages.   He even ask a particular picture where it was taken.  Husband replied that it is the Sleeping Buddha in Ayutthaya, Thailand..........

     e.  So you visited lots of countries already? At the same time looking at his passport........

     f.  How long is your wife working in the US?..........

     g.  So you know that you cant work in the US? ...............

    h.  The Consular officer said we grant your request for a Visa and he gave him a white paper.  He has to claim his passport on Wednesday (August 24, 2011).

My flight is on August 23, Im happy leaving that he got his visa approved.  I instructed him to check all the detailed information when he got his Visa and to make sure that its error free.  He still keep all the documents as those documents might be needed in the port of entry.

Hope this could help.....

Hello Dimps,

Thank you for the kind remarks. I do my best to help.

  1. LCA is a certificate which the employer files with the Department of Labor. The LCA is designed to ensure that the wage offered to the non-immigrant worker (your husband) must meet or exceed the "prevailing wage" in the area of employment. Ask your husband to send you this document.
  2. I-94 is an Arrival/Departure card. For more information please read How to fill the I-94 Arrival/Departure Record?
  3. You should say that you have been living with your in laws. Its ok to have the old address on the passport. This should not be a problem.
  4. Please say whatever you plan to do..:))
  5. I will leave it to you to answer that question. I assume you must talk with your husband every day.

Remember there is nothing to hide. Carry all the correct documents and answer the questions promptly.

What Consulate are you applying at (for the H4 visa interview)? Read this post for information on how to select a Consulate for the H4 visa interview in India?

Hello Dimps,

You are writing fairly well here so I do not think you should have a problem. If you do not understand a question, politely ask them to repeat it.

There are translation services available at the Consulates. People are discussing translation service for visas in U.S. Consulate here.

I can think of another way to help you..:)) Think about what you have to do for the preparation for the H4 visa interview. Make a list of all the documents you will need for the H4 visa interview. Then write at least one paragraph on our forum everyday. Write about any thing-where you are going, about your background, your husband's job, potential questions in H4 visa interview.

Read it slowly and clearly before posting it here. I will reply to you. We will repeat this process till you are completely confident of yourself.

Hi dear admin ,

i wanted to know what precautions should i take while attenting H4 Interview.

will they check my old records since i gave my fingure prints.

or its been several years they wll not have my data with them.

Hey Ismail, Welcome to

Hey Ismail,

Welcome to h4-visa.com and thanks for the questions. I will try my best to help.

First of all, go with your wife. Schedule a family interview. It is always better to with the H1 visa applicant. That way, they can direct all the questions to her. Second, yes they will have your old records and yes, they should ask you questions on that. Just be frank and honest. Last, tell them that you fully understand the rules and regulations related to the H4 visa and that you have no intention to work in the U.S. Carry all the paperwork and be confident. Hopefully you should get the H4 visa soon.

Don't forget to update us on how your interview goes.

H4 visa interview update from

H4 visa interview update from Haritha. Thanks for posting Haritha!

Hi,

I got my visa approved  ….It was soooo easy. He asked me just 3 questions:

1) when did u get married

2) was it a love marriage or an arranged marriage

3) where did u first meet ur spouse. and thats it, he said your visa is approved and will reach you in the next week.

I said thank you and left.
As my itenary was booked for 19th, i checked with VFS counter about picking up the passport in person, as i have not much time. They said it will take 2 working days for the consulate to handover the visa at the VFS counter, so they asked me to keep checking in the VFS site and also gave my some contact number if i needed any help regarding this.Hope i may get my visa by 18th or else i have to postpone my journey. But anyways that should not be a problem…
Thanks a lot for the wonderful blog Ridhima. It was a real help for me…..Thanks again

Regards,
Haritha

What are the chances that the

What are the chances that the H4 visa applicant is not asked a single question during the H4 visa interview?

Quite high :)) I am not joking! Really! :))

This is exactly why I recomment couples/families to go together for H1/H4 visa interviews.

Please read Naveen's account of questions asked during his H1 visa interview. His wife went with him and was asked no questions! Link to Recent H4 visa interview questions

Like Naveen you should take 2 minutes of your time to share your H4 visa experience on our forum. It will help many others and will help them prepare well for the interview.

Hey Shelly, Previous

Hey Shelly,

Previous rejection in another category of visas should not affect applying in a new category as long as the rejection was not due to criminal activities, fraud, misrepresentation, etc. I guess that does not apply to you..:))

Don't be nervous and take all the documents necessary.

Like other members here, please take 2 minutes of your time to share your H4 visa experience on our forum. It will help many others in the same situation and will help them prepare well for the interview.

We will wait for the good news in November..:))
Good luck Shelly!

Hi Shelly, It is upto you. I

Hi Shelly,

It is upto you. I carried the big album as well as a smaller album with pictures of the main ceremony, family pictures, etc. The VO only looked at my small album. However, almost everyone in the interview hall was carrying the big album. So, it is up to you..:)

It's ok. Circumstances change and now that your husband has received the H1 visa it is best for you to apply for the H1 visa and accompany him..:))

Hope this makes sense. When do you plan to go ? Have you taken a date for the interview?

All the best!

Hello Admin,

Hello Admin,

I have been using your website for a while now. My H4 visa interview was on October 4, 2011. I went with my husband for the interview. I was not asked a single question and all the questions were directed towards my husband-name of employer, name of client, qualifications, role in company, etc.

The VO kept our passports but he gave us a pink slip. Apparently he needed more documents. Within 2-3 days, we collected all the documents and submitted to the Consulate.

After waiting for about 3 weeks, we finally received my passport but not his! My H4 is stamped in the passport.

I hope we get his passport soon.

Thought of sharing my H4 visa experience with others.

Hi members,

We got the H1/H4 visa! We were so nervous and then we came across this website. We read the experiences shared by other people and gained confidence. Now it is our turn to share our H1 visa interview details.

My wife and I went together. We went to the Delhi Consulate. We did not carry any electronic devices-just documents. After getting through the security checking, document checking, fingerprinting we waited for our turn. They have a token system and you have to keep an eye on the numbers showing on the token counter above.

Once our turn came, we went to the window. We were asked the following questions:

  1. What is your name?
  2. Please give me your passports and documents.
  3. What visa are you applying for?
  4. What is the name of your company?
  5. What is the name of the client?
  6. How much salary would you draw?
  7. Tell me about your role in the company.
  8. What is your relationship with (my wife)? Please show me a marriage certificate.
  9. To my wife: what do you plan to do on the H4 visa?
  10. What is your educational qualification? Are you currently employed?

Ok that was it!! It was quite simple. He told us that we would receive our passports in the courier.

We are now happily settled in Ohio. Thank you for this wonderful site.
