Getting a name change after marriage to the H1B visa holder

Hello people,

Have you recently applied for a name change after your marriage? Please share your experiences in this context. This issue beomes very relevant for future H4 visa applicants as usually the H1 visa holder goes to India for the marriage, applies for the H4 visa for the spouse, get the visa, and fly together.

There are man steps in getting this done. Getting a date for the H4 visa interview and a marriage certificate is a big issue. Some people do not apply for a name change-they keep their maiden name on their passport, driving license, marriage certificate, and H4 visa application. Others apply for the name change. The problem is timing the whole thing. While balancing family expectations is a critical aspect of name change (Hindu rituals postulate a name change for the girl after marriage) getting your name changed can be quite a hassle, especially if you plan to fly with your spouse to the U.S.

Please share your experiences here. Did you retain your maiden name or did you get your last name changed? Did you have any issues during the H4 visa interview? Did you go to a public notary or simply the state government Gazette in India?

We welcome people to help others in their pursuit to get their name changed prior to the H4 visa interview.

Hello,
You have a very useful forum site. I got a notarized affidavit for my name change. I had to take photocopies of my passport, my husband's passport, marriage certificate, a few photos of our marriage, etc. I also needed a stamp paper.

During the H4 interview I carried the notarized affidavit to prove my changed name. There was no problem but i had to wait for almost 2 months for my name to change.

I lived in Mumbai.

Hi,

Hi,

I stumbled upon to this forum while searching for answers to my H4 visa dilemma and I must say this is the best forum I have found till now. The stories and experiences are very helpful

I have few questions regarding my situation, would be very grateful if I get them clarified :

  • My fiance is in US (H1 B Holder) and we are planning to get married by December '13/January '14. Ours is an inter-religion marriage (Me being a Muslim and he is a Hindu). I will be taking his name after marriage but not sure how soon it will be reflect in my passport. My question is that when we file for H4 visa after marriage will this name difference be an issue, his being a Hindu name and mine Muslim ? We will have a registered (court) marriage.
  • I have an MBA degree in Marketing and 2 years of experience as QA Tester with a reputed Indian IT firm. I know the work restrictions that come with H4 visa. I want to know what options I can explore during my stay there and also the possibilities of converting my H4 visa to H1 B visa ?

Looking forward to your insights on this.

Thanks

Have a great day !

Hi,

Hi,

I have changed my name after marriage in 2006. But all my documents are in old name, including passport and office records.

But my husband and son's passport has my after marriage name.

Now my h1b is in process. What documents will be required to prove the name change so that my husband and son will get H4.

Regards

Smita
